Timed vs Plain Melatonin: Is the Premium Real?

Posted on November 4, 2026 by Supplement.deals

Same-brand pairs put the timed-release premium between 0.94 and 1.2 times plain prices; shelf-class comparisons overstate the gap at three times.

Melatonin shelves carry two families of bottle. One says melatonin and a milligram figure. The other adds a release wording — time release, timed release, sustained release, extended release, prolonged release, or a design phrase like 6 hour or two-stage — usually at a higher sticker price. The pricing question is narrow and checkable: when the same brand sells the same milligram strength in both styles, how much more does the release wording actually cost per tablet? And when the comparison is made carelessly, across different brands and bottle sizes, how badly does it misstate that number?

We pulled 1,203 melatonin listings with live prices on October 27, 2026. About 9 percent carry a timed-release wording. We clicked through to the retailer pages behind the candidates, read the Supplement Facts panel for every product that made the tables, and kept only rows where the panel confirms a single active ingredient — or, in two matched pairs, the same added vitamin on both sides. Prices were re-verified against each deal page the same morning; 33 of 34 checked listings matched the catalog price exactly.

Rate = price divided by the printed tablet count and panel strength, stated per tablet and per 1,000 mg of melatonin in the bottle. The panel decides what a bottle contains; the name only suggests it.

How the two shelves price out

Every row below is a panel-verified bottle serving one tablet or capsule per use. The per-1,000 mg column prices the melatonin a bottle actually contains — the honest cross-bottle ruler, because bottle sizes run from 30 mg (a 100-count of 300 mcg tablets) to 2,400 mg (a 240-count of 10 mg tablets).

The Natrol rows carry a formula note: their panels, and the plain Natrol panels below, all print vitamin B6 alongside the melatonin. That makes the Natrol pairs a comparison of two B6-containing formulas rather than one variable — read them as brand-versus-brand, which is exactly what a shopper choosing between those two bottles would be choosing between.

The two floors tell the shelf-class story that most comparisons stop at: the cheapest timed-release bottle prices out at $13.93 per 1,000 mg against $4.17 for the cheapest plain bottle — a 3.3 times gap. Per tablet, the floors sit at 6.97 cents against 4.17 cents, 1.7 times. Read those numbers as a verdict on the wording and you have been misled by two bottles that share nothing but a shelf.

The matched pairs: what the wording actually costs

The fair comparison is the same brand, the same strength, the closest count. Five such pairs survived the panel rule. The rate column is the timed bottle divided by the plain bottle, per tablet.

Matched pairPlain bottleTimed bottleTimed-to-plain rate
Life Extension 3 mg, 60 count$7.50$9.001.20x
Life Extension 10 mg, 60 count$15.99$15.000.94x
Natrol 3 mg (plain 60, timed 100)$6.74$9.360.83x
Natrol 5 mg (plain 60, timed 100)$8.99$9.720.65x
Now Foods 5 mg (plain 180, timed 120)$11.16$8.361.12x

Four findings, all checkable from the table:

1. At equal counts, the premium is small or absent. Life Extension sells its 3 mg timed bottle for $9.00 against $7.50 plain — a genuine 1.2 times premium, the largest clean one in the set. At 10 mg the direction flips: the timed capsule bottle is $15.00 against $15.99 plain, so the release wording costs nothing there and saves 99 cents. 2. Count explains most of the rest. Natrol sells its timed bottles in 100-counts against 60-count plain bottles, and both formulas carry the same B6 addition. Per tablet the timed bottles win (0.83 and 0.65 times); the timed premium those pairs appear to charge on a sticker comparison is a bottle-size difference, not a formulation surcharge. 3. Same brand, same strength, different unit forms. The Life Extension pairs compare plain capsules against timed tablets (gelatin-based against vegetarian at 10 mg). Unit form is part of what a couple of dollars buys at this brand, and the panel — not the name — is where that is printed. 4. The 3.3 times shelf-class gap collapses to 0.94-1.20 times in matched pairs. The wording itself, priced honestly, is worth roughly nothing to a fifth more per tablet at the same brand. The rest of the cross-class gap is brand and bottle size.

What the panels caught that the names hide

Three panel findings shaped these tables more than any price did.

The flagship timed listing is a different product on its panel. The most prominent time-release 10 mg listing in the pull — 60 units, a shelf-mainstream brand — resolves to a retailer page whose panel reads like a fish-oil label: calories from fat, cholesterol, 400 mg of fish oil, and a two-column day-and-night serving design. Whatever that bottle is, it is not the plain timed-release tablet its listing name suggests, and it is out of the math. Check the panel before trusting any timed-release name; this aisle's biggest listing failed that check.

The Natrol timed-and-plain formulas share a hidden second ingredient. Vitamin B6 appears on all four Natrol panels that made the tables, at about 10 mg per tablet — many times the adult daily value of a vitamin that costs pennies wholesale. The premium question at this brand is therefore a two-formula question, which is why the pairs stay in with the co-active flagged rather than silently priced as single-ingredient melatonin. A shopper comparing those two Natrol bottles is choosing between two B6-containing products at different counts.

Same-brand near-identical names can be different formulas. One brand's 3 mg shelf shows three listings — a plain bottle, an SR-abbreviated bottle, and a spelled-out sustained-release bottle — all at the same $8.89 sticker, but with captured panels printing different supporting ingredients (one with B6 at 10 mg, another with riboflavin plus B6 at 4.1 mg). With the timed listing of that trio unverifiable at any price this run, the whole trio stays out of the math — an example of why panel-first pricing beats name reading even inside a single brand.

A field guide to the wording itself

The release vocabulary is bigger than the two-family story. In the pull: 108 of 1,203 priced listings carry a release word of some kind; 87 are timed-class wordings, and the rest are mostly rapid-release and quick-release names — the opposite design philosophy, sold in the same vocabulary. The timed class alone splits into at least seven wording families: time release and timed release (the two largest brands on the shelf), sustained release, extended release, prolonged release, hour-based designs like 6 hour, and layered-tablet phrasing such as two-stage or bi-layer. Abbreviated forms — SR, TR — appear as twin listings of spelled-out names. None of these words carries a price by itself: the matched pairs show the same brand charging anywhere from 0.94 to 1.2 times for the wording depending on strength, and one brand charging nothing at all.

Rapid-release and dissolving formats — quick-dissolve tablets, sublinguals, chewables, gummies — are separate formats with their own pricing, priced in the October melatonin guide and left out of these tables; mixing them into a timed-versus-plain comparison is the second-most-common way this shelf gets mispriced.

What stayed out, and why

- No-panel rows: a same-brand timed 3 mg bottle and a 10 mg budget plain bottle — the pull's plain floor candidate — could not be panel-verified from any reachable retailer this run. No panel, no math. - Co-active panels: a 10 mg plain listing carrying theanine, a 10 mg caplet carrying B6 and calcium, a timed 10 mg extended-release listing paired with glycine, a melatonin-plus-5-HTP time-release listing, and a plain 5 mg listing paired with B6 all sit out — single-ingredient is the table rule, with the Natrol both-sides pairs as the one flagged exception. - Claim-word names: two timed listings whose names promise an effect are excluded by rule, one of which also flipped to a crawler-blocked state during the morning check. A third brand family names its whole line with a claim word; those listings never entered the candidate pool. - Format neighbors: quick-dissolve, sublingual, chewable and gummy formats are priced in their own guide, not here.

Every exclusion above is checkable the same way we checked the tables: open the deal page, follow it to the retailer, read the panel.

The year math

At one tablet a day — the label serving on every panel in the tables — a year of the cheapest timed bottle (Now Foods 5 mg, 120 counts) costs $25.43 against $15.21 for the cheapest plain bottle (Nutricost 10 mg, 240 counts), and $91.25 against $97.27 for the Life Extension 10 mg matched pair. The spread between the most and least expensive year on the timed side is 3.6 times; on the plain side, 6.4 times. The strongest 10 mg plain bottle of the pull — 2,400 mg for ten dollars — makes the case for bottle math better than any wording does: it costs about a sixth as much per 1,000 mg as the cheapest 3 mg timed bottle of a premium brand.

The takeaway

The timed-release premium, priced brand against brand at the same strength, runs from zero (the 10 mg Life Extension pair, where timed is cheaper) through about a fifth more per tablet (the 3 mg pair). The frightening multiples on this shelf — 3.3 times between class floors, 21.5 times across the timed table, 10 times across the plain one — are brand and bottle-size arithmetic wearing a formulation story. Compare per 1,000 mg, then compare the matched pair, and the label premium mostly evaporates; what remains is a couple of dollars a year, plus whatever a second ingredient on four of the shelf's biggest panels is worth to you.

Priced alongside this guide: vitamin C, omega-3, zinc, calcium, biotin, turmeric and probiotics in the same per-unit series, with the melatonin ingredient page cataloging the strength ladder behind both tables.
