Collagen Powder vs Pills: The Per-Gram Price Math

Posted on October 28, 2026 by Supplement.deals

The mg number on a collagen bottle is a per-serving figure. We priced the shelf per gram of collagen, powder against pills.

Collagen is the shelf where the number on the front of the bottle and the number on the back belong to different containers. A bottle says 6,000 mg. The panel behind it says a serving is six caplets. A tub says nothing about milligrams at all, and a scoop carries twenty grams. Until you put both on the same ruler, the tub and the bottle cannot be compared, and the shelf counts on you not trying. This week we put them on one ruler: the dollar per gram of collagen, computed from live prices and the serving lines printed on the retailer panels behind every row.

We pulled 1,578 collagen-family listings with a live price on supplement.deals on October 20: 336 with a powder word in the name, 371 in counted pill formats, and 111 that print a strength figure right in the name. We live-checked 26 candidates twice and read the serving panel behind every row that made the tables below. Thirteen rows across twelve products survived with a verified panel and a verified price: five powders and seven pill bottles. Five listings had already flipped to their unavailable page by check time, one of them a six-tablet value bottle that was live and priced when we drafted, and a handful of others carried panels we could not fully read; those are named at the end.

Corrected rate = price divided by (units per container times panel collagen grams per unit), stated per gram of collagen. The panel serving line is what makes it correct: on pills, the printed milligrams are a per-serving figure at a multi-unit serving.

The name number is a serving number

Here is the convention almost every pill bottle on this shelf follows. The NeoCell bottle named Collagen Type I and III 6000 mg, 300 Caplets prints its panel as six caplets per serving, fifty servings per container, and 6,000 mg of collagen per serving. One bottle in our pull even says so right in the name: 6000 mg (per serving). The arithmetic that follows is unglamorous but decisive: 6,000 mg across six caplets is 1,000 mg per caplet. A shopper who reads the name as bottle strength is off by a factor of six. And since the pill itself is mostly capsule and flow agent by volume, the number that actually prices the bottle is the gram total: fifty servings at six grams, three hundred grams of collagen in the biggest honest bottle in the pull.

The premium segment plays a different game. The Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen bottle, 45 capsules at 28.01 dollars, serves three capsules with 1.5 grams of multi-source collagen, which is 500 mg per capsule. The Great Lakes Wellness bottle serves four capsules of 2.5 g Verisol branded peptides, 625 mg each. Those serving sizes are not wrong; multi-source blends and branded peptide ingredients are different compositions. But the front-of-bottle number game hides them, because a shopper comparing 6,000 mg against 1.5 g per serving sees only that one number is bigger, when the real difference is twenty-nine-fold once the price goes per gram.

The powder shelf, priced per gram

Powder is where the arithmetic is printed openly. Every tub we verified serves 20 g of collagen peptides per scoop and states its servings per container right on the panel.

The Garden of Life tub is the floor of the entire fourteen-row pull: 11.99 dollars for 280 g of collagen works out to 4.28 cents per gram. The Vital Proteins canister, the most famous name on the shelf, carries the identical panel math (14 servings of 20 g, protein 18 g per scoop) and prices at 10.0 cents per gram, 2.3 times the floor for the brand. Single-serve formats break the pattern badly: the Youtheory packets carry 6 g each and price at 14 cents per gram, and the Ancient Nutrition stick packs at 10 g each reach 16.8 cents, 3.9 times the tub floor for the convenience of a pre-measured pouch.

The pill shelf, priced per gram

Pills can compete with powder, but only one class of them does: the old-school six-tablet hydrolyzed bottles.

the most expensive collagen per gram in the pull, a concrete picture of what the premium multi-source capsule format charges.

Price verified October 28, 2026.

The Type I and III bottle at 300 caplets lands at 6.0 cents per gram, within 40 percent of the powder floor and cheaper than three of the five powders in the pull. The Youtheory six-tablet bottles both land at 8.0 cents, mid-powder territory. Those are real results, and they surprise shoppers who assume pills are always a bad deal. The catch is the swallow: at a six-caplet serving, the 6-cent-per-gram bottle asks you to take six caplets a day, fifty days to a bottle, while the floor tub asks for one scoop. Same math, different breakfast.

From there the pill shelf degrades fast. The NeoCell multi-source caplets serve 3 at a time and price at 20.1 cents per gram. The Verisol capsules reach 33.3 cents. And the Ancient Nutrition 45-capsule bottle closes the pull at 1.24 dollars per gram: 22.5 grams of collagen in total, a quantity the floor tub sells for 96 cents. Twenty-nine times the powder floor is not a rounding error; it is the price of a format premium stacked on a source premium stacked on a small bottle.

What a year of label servings costs

At one panel serving per day, the verified rows run from 131 dollars a year (the Type I and III bottle) to 730 dollars (Vital Proteins at its 20 g daily scoop), with the Ancient Nutrition 45-count bottle at 682 dollars a year for the least collagen per dollar in the pull. The mid-shelf is instructive: the two Youtheory pill bottles cost about 175 dollars a year, the floor tub 313 dollars, the packets 306 dollars, and the stick packs 612 dollars. How much collagen a person should take is a question for a clinician and not for a price table; the yearly figures here are comparison devices, not advice.

The panels that did not survive contact

The exclusions are part of the finding. Five listings were showing their unavailable page by publish time, including the Spring Valley collagen gummies, a Great Lakes 10 oz tub at 6.99 dollars that would have contended for the floor, and a six-tablet value bottle that was live and priced in our draft pull; a rate that died with its listing came out of the math by the panel rule. Two powder tubs priced well (a NeoCell 20 oz at 30 dollars, a NOW multi-collagen 16 oz at 29.99) printed their scoop sizes but no servings-per-container line we could capture, so their gram totals are unverifiable; a rate we cannot recompute from the panel is not a rate we print. Two Youtheory beauty powders add biotin at 833 percent daily value and 200 mg of vitamin C to every scoop, and one of their panels prints the collagen line in micrograms, 6,000 of them, a unit the tub weight alone rules out. The PipingRock 360-caplet page mixes several bottle sizes in one facts table, and its protein line contradicts its name arithmetic. A same-price duplicate of the Type I and III bottle sits on the shelf under a second listing, as do duplicates for the multi-collagen and Vital Proteins rows. Combo-named bottles (collagen with biotin, with turmeric, with vitamin blends) stayed out of the math by rule.

Where this fits in the series

This is the fourteenth guide in our per-unit price series. Cost per serving sized the creatine monohydrate shelf, per-gram math settled the mass gainer versus whey question, and per-unit panels priced vitamin D3 5000 IU, vitamin B12 1000 mcg, magnesium glycinate, and vitamin C 1000 mg. Collagen is the series' first format war, and the panel is the referee: read the serving line before the name number. The full listing set, including every row in the tables above, is on our collagen deals page alongside the rest of the best supplement deals we track. Every price here was live and verified on October 28, 2026.
